The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) recently hosted an event at the United Nations to explain how digital solutions can drive progress toward the SDGs.
One speaker at the event, Mr. Lius Neves (Chairman of GeSI), mentioned how information and communications technology (ICT) is helpful to all SDG goals. For example, ICT fosters changes in business models. ICT can help design new factory operation logistics to lower pollution levels.
Another speaker, Ms. Elizabeth Rojas Levi (Director of Public Affairs and Government Relations for the Americas Region, Nokia Corporation) pointed out how companies approach technology design in the past vs. the present. In the past, many companies developed and designed technology first, then examined the impact on human and the environment. Now, companies with social responsibility concepts look at human issues and the environment before they start designing the technology.
